The disc is seriously one of the best ways to get your HDTV properly setup but some question the quality of calibration via a 480p DVD player. What we need is a high-def version but the disc has been constantly pushed back but hopefully this time around we will finally see the disc hit shelves come February 27th. This will be the best $34.99 you have spent on your HDTV if you happen to have an HD DVD player and unfortunately for Blu-ray owners, they haven’t announced that version yet.

So it looks like HD DVD fans are not going to get Spielberg’s blockbuster films as soon as expected. The PR group for the HD DVD forum has just posted an apology for placing E.T., Jaws, and Jurassic Park on their Coming Soon list before consulting with Spielberg first. Long time movie experts know that Spielberg does not embrace new home movie formats right off the bat, but rather waits for a bit - George Lucas is the same way with his films. So basically, these three movies are not going to be the saving grace of HD DVD anytime soon.

Series3 8.1 upgrade at CES

The exact reason isn’t known, but considering other more important features that are missing; it is reasonable to believe that somewhere along the way the code base split and TiVo has some work to do, to catch up on the Series3. Almost immediately after the Series3 released there was talk of a .1 update and at TiVo’s CES booth they were demoing the Series3 with the latest software. We can’t wait for this to be released into the wild and many other features to be enabled on the Series3, especially the new features that are only available on the Comcast version.

More pics after the jump. The highly desired “Recently Deleted”, not only does it no longer request deletion confirmation, but it keeps your shows there till you need room, so you always know how much space you have left for new recordings.

According to Nikkei, Sanyo has developed a blue laser diode which will speed up data access, and moreover, should be able to reach write speeds of “up to 6x for dual-layer discs.” Similar to LG’s combo unit, this diode also plays nice with both HD DVD and Blu-ray recorders, but there’s no word if a hybrid writer using the laser is in our immediate future. Still, any progress towards harmony between the formats — not to mention being able to burn a dual-layer Blu-ray disc in time for your next birthday — is a step in the right direction, so we’re expecting nothing less than a 6x burner to be hitting shelves sooner rather than later, Sanyo. This time around, Pittsburgh’s Heinz Field is getting ready to see a high definition makeover as it seeks to replace the aging SD screen that has stood since the stadium opened in 2001. The new HD display, which will be manufactured by Daktronics, should be fully installed and ready to go for the 2007 Steelers’ season, and will reportedly enable an additional 3,600 ticket holders who can’t see the current board due to a viewing angle snafu to get a glimpse of those beautiful HD replays. Notably, no details were present about the exact resolution, screen size, or any other specifications of the sure-to-be-mammoth board (as is the case on the forthcoming screen to be built in the Washington Nationals Baseball Stadium), but it won’t be too long before we’ll get to gaze at this bad boy in person, anyway.

You don’t get a lot of extras with NEC’s 19-inch MultiSync 1940CX LCD display. In fact, you’ll have to supply your own digital cable to utilize its DVI input. Nevertheless, this monitor is a good choice for users seeking a general-purpose LCD.
